New Taco Champ Crowned in Greenport

How many tacos can you eat in one sitting?

With a bulging buffet of food challenges tempting those with voracious appetites nationwide, Greenport now has its own entry, a weekly taco-eating contest.

According to Marc LaMaina, owner of Lucharitos, where the contest is held every Tuesday on $2 taco day, contestants "have to eat as many as they can. The record right now is held by the champ Kyle Fiasconaro of Greenport, with 15 tacos eaten in one sitting."

Prize winners receive a T-shirt and a luchador wrestling mask, LaMaina said.

"Lucharitos translates into little fighter. My son Joey was in the hospital fighting a very high fever when he was a month old, same time we were thinking of a name for the bar," he said. "So the little fighter is him. The masks are a huge part of Mexican wrestling and Mexican culture."

Despite the full slate of food challenge shows on TV, LaMaina said the contest wa born locally. "We got inspiration by just being fatties and seeing how many we could eat," he laughed.
