Martha Clara Vineyards' 2010 Merlot has been named the best in New York State.

The vineyard, located at 6025 Sound Avenue in Riverhead, earned the honor last month at the New York Wine & Food Classic Competition, held in Watkins Glen.

The 18-year-old vineyard's 2010 Merlot, will now be featured as part of a New York State new television ad campaign that aims to promote New York State as a global leader in wine production.

This is not the first award earned by the winery. Martha Clara also holds The Jefferson Trophy for its 2010 Estate Reserve Riesling; the Governor’s Cupfor its 2011 Riesling; and was recognized with a ‘Sustainable Vineyard’ status as a member of Long Island Sustainable Winegrowers.

Martha Clara, which was thrilled with the latest designation said its 2010 Merlot is described as "possessing a rich garnet color embodying notes of cinnamon and cocoa with medium bodied soft easy drinking tannins."

The wine, Martha Clara said blends flavors of black cherry, dried cranberry and velvety tannins and pairs well with pasta dishes, grilled beef or bison and soft or hard cheeses.
