Kontokosta Winery to Open During Spring on the LI Sound

Tasting room to open after seven years of wine production on Sound-side Greenport property, Newsday reports.

A 9,000-square-foot tasting room is set to open as Kontokosta Winery this coming spring on a 62-acre property overlooking the Long Island Sound in Greenport, and Newsday took a tour of the place this week.

Brothers Michael and Constantine Kontokosta own the property, which began its run as a vineyard in 2006 and now produces grapes such as cabernet franc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc and riesling. With the help of local winemaker Gilles Martin, Kontokosta Winery will produce about 3,000 cases a year with a tasting room designed around renewable energy with a 19th-century New England feel.

The Kontokostas own the Harbor Front Inn in Greenport and opened up Cove Place Inn in Aquebogue this past summer.
