In Season: String Beans Join a Second Wave of Sweet Corn At Farm Stands

Manager of Harbes says hanging baskets of petunias are also all the rage this week.

The long Fourth of July weekend might have wiped out some local farm stands of their initial sweet corn supply, but at least two  will have plenty to replenish the shelves for this coming weekend.

"We were able to just make it," said Gwen Gajeski, owner of Northville Farm Stand in Riverhead of the long weekend. "Everyone wanted their corn for the Fourth. But we'll have more from the second crop rotation for this week."

This second round of sweet corn means that more ears of the unmistakably delicious Long Island vegetable will join fresh batches of green and yellow string beans, yellow squash and zucchini, and red and Yukon gold potatoes at the Northville Farm Stand.

Head east from Northville on Sound Avenue into Mattituck and you'll also find sweet corn at — but Harbes employees like to call it "super sweet corn."

"Our super sweet corn is just about ready, and we have been selling corn from other Riverhead farms," said employee April Rocchetta.

Heirloom tomatoes are also ready and on the shelves early in the growing season, according to Harbes assistant manager Dawn Carlson, as are bunches of lettuce and batches of zucchini.

But this time of year, you'll be floored by the array of flowers available for purchase at Harbes' Farm.

"The hanging pouches and hanging baskets of petunias are all the rage right now," she said. "Especially with people with summer homes out here — they want instant beauty, and that we can provide."
