Gather Your Non-Perishables for the Post Office On Saturday

Postal carriers to collect goods for Island Harvest on Saturday.

On Saturday postal carriers will be collecting more than just letters. As part Island Havest’s Stamp Out Hunger Campaign, which aims to provide food to the needy, postal carriers from to will be gathering non-perishable food items left in the mailboxes of their patrons.

“As long as the food goes to the right places, it's worth it," said Joe, a postal worker into his first year with the who declined to give his last name. "I used to work in Mastic and they did a good job there."

Post Office officials recommend that homeowners place multiple items in bags for the carriers, so as to make their job a little less taxing. People can leave non-perishable food items and toiletries as well.

According to Island Harvest, all the goods collected will be sent to soup kitchens and food banks across the island to help feed the 285,000 on Long Island who may be going hungry every day.
