Gas Is a Thing of the Past at Eastern Tire as Repair Service Gets Update

Historic Cutchogue auto repair center gets a facelift.

Eastern Tire in Cutchogue will soon have its historic auto repair shop up and running again after a few years of down time.

The building located on the corner of Route 25 and Eugene’s Road in Cutchogue has always been a gas station / repair shop since it was built in the 1920s, said Peggy Killian, who runs the tire shop still in operation in the back. But the man who rented the gas station in front left the business in 2010, when New York State mandated the upgrade of underground tanks.

“He left before he had to take them out,” she said.

Pumping gas will now be a thing of the past at the corner location, but the original building and its additions are currently being renovated for a newer auto repair facility.

“We’re trying for one to make it look better — it was an eyesore before — and to make it more user-friendly for repair services,” Killian said.

Killian added that she hopes to install a quick-lube oil changing service in addition to the general repair, and that renovations, which started about three weeks ago,  should be done in about two weeks.

The Eastern Tire Service Station has four full-time mechanics and one part-timer, Killian said.
