East End Arts Council Releases Jazzfest Lineup

Concerts range from traditional jazz to a seminar series on the avant garde.

The on Monday released the 2011 concert lineup for its popular LI Winterfest, and concert series that features scattered jazz performances throughout various wineries on venues on the East End.

The six-week program features artists participating in ensembles from large to small playing in a variety of styles from latin to straight-ahead jazz. Standouts include a performance from saxophonist Dave Liebman and Winterfest regular David Amram, a composer best know for his association with the Beat Generation movement in the 1950s.

"Again, this festival continues to grow and is gaining more and more recognition with jazz aficionados. The quality of music the public can look forward to hearing is amazing," Pat Snyder, executive director of the East End Arts Council, said in a statement.

Though there is one noticeable change this year: Participating wineries will be for the concerts, though that usually comes with a glass of wine and entry into a weekly drawing for a free weekend hotel room on the East End as well as other gifts.

Another big change is the involvement of thein Riverhead, which in addition to hosting a few concerts, will host and jam sessions featuring some of the artists performing at the wineries.

The festival is also adding a free lecture series to the lineup, spread over three weekends and focusing the discussion on "out" jazz. Otherwise known as avant garde, out jazz was known for its free form and often cacophonous compositions. Artists such as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor dedicated a large section of their musical canons to this type of music.

The first of the lectures, on Feb. 12 at in Greenport, is called “Trane’s Travels: Giant Steps to Ascension.”

In addition to the festival, some wineries who did not want to have to charge a cover fee, will be hosting music as well. For example, will be featuring artist Matt Marshak on Feb. 12, the first day of the festival.
