NAMI'S Family-to-Family Group Comes to the North Fork!

When one family member is diagnosed with mental illness, the whole family enters a lonely time of coping with symptoms, feeling isolated from other families, and struggling with the question, “What do we do now?” Thanks to NAMI, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, now families can find information and support all in one place.

NAMI was formed years ago by family members of people diagnosed with serious mental illness, to advocate for their needs and to provide a resource for information, education and support. Recognizing that the families of people with mental illness also need support, Dr. Joyce Burland, a parent of a child diagnosed with schizophrenia, initially developed the Family-to-Family Program, which has helped thousands of people over the years.

In the past, North Fork residents have had to drive to the South Fork to participate in the Family-To-Family program.  Because of the travel involved, many families on the North Fork could not take advantage of this program.  BUT NOW NAMI’S FAMILY-TO-FAMILY PROGRAM IS COMING TO THE NORTH FORK!

NAMI’s Family-to-Family program will be offered on the North Fork for the first time, beginning on October 10. The group, open to family members of all ages, will be led by two facilitators skilled in meeting their own needs while caring for a mentally ill family member.  The group will meet for ten weeks.  No therapists are involved, just family members helping family members learn to cope with their challenges, and discover how to promote well-being and happiness in their family, no matter what the challenges!

There is no charge for the group. For further information call Sharon 631/680-0849.
