EVERY VOICE IS HEARD = THE UNITY IN COMMUNITY!

What does a town board meeting have to do with therapy? Both are about well-being and self-expression.  If people in a town feel that their voices are heard and their choices matter, then they can feel happy and at home.  Similarly when people in therapy experience that their voices are heard, and their choices matter, then they too feel happy and at home.

It’s really amazing what a difference it makes when we say what we mean and mean what we say.  The town board meeting is a remarkable opportunity to appreciate democracy in action.  Watching the national news, it sometimes seems like the big decisions are made someplace else and we have no say in the outcome.  But here in Southold, people speak up—because they really care and they want to make a difference.

As a therapist, I suggest that if you want to feel good about the democratic process, go to a Town Board Meeting.  Notice what happens when people participate.  Notice how all views are heard and respected. Then take that message home.  Notice what happens in your own life, when you speak up and respectfully listen to the views of others.

It’s when every voice is heard that we experience the “unity” in community. And that promotes mental health, prevents bullying, and connects us all in spirit.
