Teddy Charles Keeps Jazz Alive in Riverhead

Octogenarian jazz master vibraphonist Teddy Charles inspires local musicians and composers at a performance in Riverhead Tuesday night.

in Riverhead hosted an evening of live jazz Tuesday night featuring local vibraphonist and jazz great Teddy Charles with Billy Johnson and Ben Riley. The event offered the opportunity for local jazz musicians and composers to come together to share information and network to promote local jazz.

Riverhead resident Teddy Charles is an accomplished vibraphonist and octogenarian still active in the jazz scene here on the North Fork. Charles played and produced music with jazz legends such as Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, and Benny Goodman. His eclectic approach to jazz improvisation has inspired musicians around the world to push the boundaries of creativity to the next level.

An evening with these musicians offered a window through which younger, aspiring musicians and composers could see and hear what the forefathers of today's modern jazz were experimenting with. American Jazz is known the world over as the ultimate expression of intellectual musical creativity — something like musicians such as Charles have spent their lives perfecting.
