Humans & Sculpture/ Birds & Nests - NFAS

Jun. 18th(Sat.),"Humans and Sculpture/Birds and Nests"
10 am Nature Workshop by NFAS
11 am Art making by a a sculptor Diane Giardi

If you marvel at the intricate, site-specific works of art created from sticks, string, vines, grass, leaves, feathers and spider webs by birds---otherwise known as nests--you will enjoy this unique hands-on workshop led by Audubon educators and artist Diane Giardi.

North Fork Audubon educators will teach you about the nesting habits, styles and materials of local birds, using our collection of bird nests. Next, inspired by nature, nests and the work of Henry David Thoreau, Diane Giardi will lead our group to create a unique, place-based sculpture on the grounds of the Red House in conjunction with the exhibition "Beyond Spheres: Landscapes."Utilizing natural materials gathered nearby, we will design and build a large nest-like form, integrating wrapping, weaving and the addition of inspirational text. The process will involve creating, assembling and a final display outside in the garden/woods area.

Diane Giardi (MFA in ceramics) is an artist and educator who works in multi-mediums. Her sculptures, whether in porcelain, fiber, or other materials, are organic in nature, textural, and play with form, movement and the relationship of structure and space. She is inspired by nature, text, and ideas of life, death, and the permanency of spirit. She is presently adjunct faculty at Endicott College in Beverly, MA.
