Don't Miss: 'Carousel'

The North Fork Community Theatre brings a Broadway favorite to the stage.

The North Fork Community Theatre will present a beloved Broadway classic this spring, as it unveils its production of "Carousel."

"Carousel" is well-known for its classic book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and music by Richard Rodgers; NFCT's production is directed by David Markel, with musical direction by Charlotte Day.

Shows run from May 16  through June 2, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and on Sundays at 2:30 p.m. A free opening night reception will be held on May 16 at 7 p.m. before the show, as well as on May 23 and 30.

According to the NFCT website, "Carousel" takes place in a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, as "the swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the naive millworker, Julie Jordan."

The show follows Billy's journey as he loses his job and learns that Julie is pregnant.  Trying to provide for his family, Billy finds himself an accomplice to a robbery.

"Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own," the website explains. "Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day 15 years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager, her father's reputation as a thief and bully having haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love."
