Your Guide to What's Going On in Greenport During 'Taste North Fork'

Greeenport has a full slate of activities for the Taste North Fork event over Veterans Day weekend.

As the biggest event ever to hit the North Fork unfolds on Veterans Day weekend, with "Taste North Fork" bringing visitors on free bus loops from Riverhead to Mattituck, and then, out to Greenport, here's a full roundup of what's going on in Greenport Village, as found on  greenportvillage.com.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone visited Mattituck Wednesday to kick off the event, which will introduce visitors to the foods, wines, and attractions the North Fork has to offer in the shoulder season.

During the festivities, the Village of Greenport will welcome boaters to free self-service use of its dock. Daytime only; no overnights. Rest rooms will be open, but there will be limited use of the marina and facilities and no electric or water service.

7 p.m.: A “Freshly Farmed Dinner” at First and Southone of the newest additions to Greenport Village. First and South "combines traditional American Bistro with the discovery and history of a local community rich with fresh ingredients". 100 South Street

Saturday, November 9th

8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Chef Scott Bollman will be featuring fresh lobster rolls paired with Koppert Cress Microgreens. Bruce & Son also stocks many local gourmet items.  208 Main Street.

10 a.m:   Clarke's Garden presents a demonstration of Healing Through Nature Body Products which are grown, harvested, and made on Shelter Island by Holly Cronin.  416 Main Street.

10 a.m.: Free tour of Greenport Harbor Brewery with a live brewing demonstration. Brewing room open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.  234 Carpenter Street.

10 a.m. to 3 pm.:  “Dyed In The Wool” at The Sirens’ Song Gallery   Demonstration of natural yarn dyeing by brewing up flowers, nuts, berries and other items you find growing in your own back yard. Hands-on spinning and weaving workshop. Children welcome. In collaboration with Oysterponds Historical Society.   516 Main Street.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Sample seven varieties of North Fork Potato Chips made from potatoes grown on the North Fork. Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street 

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Meet Captain A.J Combs, decoy carver and member of a North Fork family that has been carving since 1644. Watch as Capt. Combs transforms chunks of wood into works of art.  Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

10 a.m. to 4 pm.:  Taste samples of Catapano Dairy Farm's goat cheese and yogurt and learn about the health and beauty products they make from their goat milk. Ongoing Q & A throughout the day.  Central Avenue next to Emilio's Restaurant, 400 Main Street.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.:  Southold's Catapano Farm presents their cold crop vegetables, strawberry jelly, and wool from their sheep.  At 3 p.m. stop by for a Container Gardening demonstration and learn how to grow fresh herbs and basic vegetables in containers. Central Avenue next to Emilio's Restaurant, 400 Main Street.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.:  Ken Schneider, owner and operator of REALLY GOOD® Fruit Spreads will be sampling his fruit spreads and discussing the nutritional benefits of his products, which are made in Cutchogue.  Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.:  Sterlington Deli will offer a special menu featuring local eggs, cheese, fish, and vegetables. Eat in or take out.  3 Sterlington Commons.

10 a.m to 4 p.m.: Harbor Lights Oyster Company owner and operator Ted Bucci will educate about his crop of oysters. Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.:   Blue Ruth presents jewelry made with horn from 8 Hands Farm, a sustainable North Fork sheep farm located in Cutchogue. Discussion of the jewelry-making process and info about the farm.  29 Front Street.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.:  Sweet Indulgences, which sells chocolates, candy, and gourmet food made  on Long Island, pairs four local wines (Milk: 2011 One Woman Gewürztraminer; Smooth Dark: Mattebella La Famiglia Merlot; Medium Dark: Sparkling Pointe; Extra Dark: Martha Clara “Clusters” Port-style wine) with Brix chocolate. Edible East End editor and wine specialist Eileen Duffy will present the pairings and hand out samples of Edible East End magazine.  Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Taste of the North Fork presents products made using local fruits and produce. Learn about pickling and how to preserve the tasty local harvest. Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m: Cheesemaker Karen Danzer from Aquebogue's Goodale Farms presents an array of local vegetables, fresh milk, goat cheese, cow's milk cheese, fresh pies, and cheesecake all made at the farm.  Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m.:  Gail Horton Hooked Rugs and Hangings will be demonstrating her craft and selling her hooked rugs, made in Greenport.  Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

10 a.m. to 4 pm.:  Santa's Christmas Tree Farm presents Rudolph the Reindeer. View live, decorated trees. Demonstration of how to make a live wreath. Meet artists making custom ornaments.  Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

11 a.m. to 4 p.m.:  Southold Farmers Market student volunteers present a history of the Long Island Rail Road and its effect on a boost in the North Fork’s agricultural economy from 1800-1970.  Display includes model trains, early stations, agricultural farms, and more.  Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

11 a.m.  to 11:30 a.m.:   "Food for Thought" with Karen Lee of Sang Lee Farms. Organic juices and prepared foods will be offered for sale throughout the day.  Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

11 a.m. to 6 p.m.: The White Weathered Barn will be creating gifts, keepsakes, jewelry and more from natural elements like rocks, shells and driftwood found on the North Fork.  41 Front Street.

11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.:  Meet the Farmers:  Long Island Mushroom's Jane Maguire and John Quigley at Claudio’s Restaurant.  111 Main Street.

Noon to 2 p.m.  Meet Chef Keith Luce, a 16th generation native North Forker, and creator of The Square.  Visit Prep in The Square for an afternoon of farm fresh pizza-making featuring Long Island Mushroom and Mar-Gene Farms organics paired with local wines and ales.  300 Main Street.

Noon to 3 p.m.:  “GREENPORCH” : A walking porch tour/scavenger hunt featuring six  Greenport Village settings working together with local agricultural and maritime viniculture producers. Snacks and beverages at each porch. Free. (Optional wine tasting fees). Noon to 4 p.m.:  Wine tasting with Laurel Lake Vineyards at Vines & Branches. 477 Main Street.

1 p.m..: North Fork Food and Wine Scavenger Hunt.  Discover Greenport Village and learn about Greenport Farmers Market’s farmers and friends in a fun and active contest. Starting line at 1 p.m.  Greenport Farmers Market will be in Mitchell Park all day. Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street.

1 to 5 p.m.  East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation welcomes visitors to view exhibits on the maritime heritage of the area, including displays on the Greenport menhaden fishing industry, the oyster industry, lighthouse lenses, a model ship of the USS Ohio, and more.  Located on 3rd Street near the ferry terminal.

1 p.m. to 3 p.m.   At The Times Vintage Herbalist Donna Penney, who recreated Zincuta Ointment from Dr. Josiah Case’s 1890 original formula, will discuss the history and use of the product.  429 Main Street.

2 p.m.: Clarke's Garden presents Beds and Borders' Heather Stephenson, who will demonstrate the art of ornamental container gardening and speak about the 100s of varieties grown at this popular Laurel greenhouse.  416 Main Street.

Noon to 3 p.m.: Mac Griswold, author of "The Manor: Three Centuries at a Slave Plantation on Long Island" will be signing her latest book and will be joined by Maura Doyle, the Historic Preservation Coordinator at Sylvester Manor, who will share the history and programs now available at one of the oldest historical sites on Shelter Island. Under the tent in Mitchell Park, Front Street

11 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Blue Ruth presents jewelry made with horn from 8 Hands Farm, a sustainable North Fork sheep farm located in Cutchogue. Discussion of the jewelry-making process and a bit of information about the farm.  29 Front Street.

11 a.m. to 6 p.m.:  The White Weathered Barn will be creating gifts, keepsakes, jewelry and more from natural elements like rocks, shells and driftwood found on the North Fork.  41 Front Street.

11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wolffer Estate Hard Cider & Apple Wine truck, samples, and tastings in the parking lot at Claudio’s Restaurant  111 Main Street.

11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oysterpond oysters and Peconic Bay clams shucked at  Claudio’s Restaurant  by the third place winner of “The World’s Fastest Shucker” contest, February 2013111 Main Street.

11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Taste North Fork prix fixe three-course tasting menu offered with or without wine pairing.  Available for both lunch & dinner at Noah’s, 136 Front Street

Noon to 6 p.m.: All veterans (proof required) receive a free appetizer with a menu purchase at Front Street Station. 212 Front Street.

1 to 5 p.m. East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation welcomes visitors to view exhibits on the maritime heritage of the area, including displays on the Greenport menhaden fishing industry, the oyster industry, lighthouse lenses, a model ship of the USS Ohio, and more.  Located on 3rd Street near the ferry terminal.

2 to 4 p.m.: Meet the Grower:  Scott Dubois of Breeze Hill Farm apples at Claudio’s Restaurant  111 Main Street.
