Weird News: Great White Shark Visits the Hamptons

Some stories are downright strange. Here's our wrap-up from around Northern Suffolk and the East End.

As a local news organization, Patch covers stories of all kinds, from heartbreaking tragedies to inspiring tales of community brotherhood. But some stories are just plain weird. Here are some of the stranger headlines from the past seven days.

How Does that Music From 'Jaws' Go Again?

A great white shark named Mary Lee caught the attention of many, including the national media, after her Hamptons layover earlier this week. The 16-foot, 3,456-pound carcharodon carcharias, came close to the Quogue shoreline on Wednesday night, moving by Thursday morning to visit East Hampton and finally Montauk.

As of Friday at 1 p.m., she was heading away from the Hamptons and farther into the Atlantic.

Her movements can be tracked here.

According to OCEARCH Chairman Chris Fischer, Mary Lee is the second of two Atlantic great whites the foundation has tagged — the first was Genie, who last pinged in Savannah, GA, on Jan. 19.

Cops Use Taser on Man After He Hurls Vase

An East Hampton man was shot with a Taser after police responded to a domestic incident in the Oak View Highway Mobile Home Village on Jan. 22.

Police said the man's hands and clothes were covered in "a large amount of blood" when they arrived at 7:40 a.m. Police did not report anyone else hurt. In his arrest report, police said he was "out of control and extremely dangerous."

Golden allegedly moved toward the officer, and picked up a large glass vase, which was filled with rocks and beach glass, and he yelled out. The officer instructed Golden to drop the vase, but he threw instead towards the officer. The vase missed the officer and shattered through a double glass window.

Double Rainbow Over Commack

While the photo is not quite as dramatic as the classic viral YouTube double rainbow video, reader Mike Seilback caught this rare shot of a double rainbow over Commack Thursday morning.
