Top 5 Ways To Stay Cool On The North Fork

Share your ideas on how to stay cool with Patch.

North Fork residents are still sweltering, as the heat wave continues to blanket the area with blistering temps and suffocating humidity.

Staying cool is not just about comfort — for some people, it’s about safety. Weather like this puts everyone, but especially the very young and older adults, at risk.

Here’s North Fork Patch’s list of the top places to keep cool:

1. Libraries: The Matituck-Laurel Library, Cutchogue New Suffolk Free Library, Southold Free Library and Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport all have air-conditioning. Pick up a new book, catch up on your magazine reading or surf the Internet while staying cool.

2. Go Hollywood: There's nothing like a cold movie theater on a hot day. Mattituck Cinemas and the Village Cinema in Greenport have some cool flicks playing. So grab the kids, get a bucket of popcorn, and beat the heat.

3. The Beach: The North Fork has some of the world's most idyllic beach spots. So grab a towel, bathing suit, and a cooler full of drinks and sandwiches and head down to one of your favorite spots.

4. Listen to some cool jazz and sip some vino: Visit any of the North Fork's great wineries for an afternoon of cool music and wine tasting in the shade.

5. Start Back to School Shopping: Greenport has come alive with new and old favorite shops. Take a stroll through the village for some great finds — and pop into an ice cream shop for a cool treat.
