The Heavens and Heavenly Music: Holiday Events at the Custer Insitutute

The Custer Institute and Observatory offers not just stargazing through its many telescopes but musical and social events this holiday season.

The in Southold has a full schedule of holiday events — astronomical, musical and social.

1. Check out the institute's holiday party with the East End Ensemble Seasonal Concert on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. The event features a buffet dinner and to which all are welcome to contribute a favorite dish or dessert. Grab Bag: bring a gift, get a gift (maximum value $10).  Suggested donations are as follows: $20 Members and their guests; $25 nonmembers; $15 students; $5 children; $12 per person if only attending concert. 2. The Geminid Meteor Shower Party will be held on Dec. 11 from 7 to 12 p.m. Suggested donations are as follows: $5 adult, $3 children, members free.

3. The New York Holiday Singers, an a cappella group, visit Custer on Dec. 18 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Suggested donation (includes general admission for stargazing): $10 members, $12 nonmembers, $8 students.

4. It is not yet determined if Custer will be open for the total lunar eclipse Tuesday, December 21, which begins at 1:32 a.m., with totality at 2:40 a.m. to 3:53 a.m. Check website closer to the date.

5. Custer will host its sixth-annual "New Year's Eve Under the Stars," with music by Ahmad Ali and Friends on Dec. 31 starting at 8 p.m. Refreshments include finger foods, desserts, and beverages. You're welcome to bring your favorite dish or dessert to add to the buffet. Dance to live R&B and jazz. There will be a champagne toast at 12 a.m. Suggested donations are as follows: $25 for members and their guests, $30 for nonmembers, $15 students, $5 children.
