For the first time this year, the 9th Annual Relay for Life will take place at a new location, Mitchell Park in Greenport, at a new time, from noon until midnight, on May 31.

The community will join together to make a difference by raising awareness about the disease, as well as funds to support the American Cancer Society’s research efforts and programs that support and educate people battling the disease.

According to the Relay team, the latest statistics show that one in two men, and one in three women, will be diagnosed with invasive cancer.

"The good news is that for over four consecutive years now, the number of cancer-related deaths has decreased," the Relay team said in a release.

At the Relay for Life events, groups form teams to raise funds for cancer research. At the event, the groups create campsites where they walk in memory of those lost, light luminaria bags and candles, dance, and participate in other activities.

Cancer survivors walk amidst those holding candles and signs for those they've lost. At the end of the event, participants commit to fight back and advocate for a cancer-free future.
