Smithtown's Most Dangerous Cut-Throughs?

What residential streets have become virtual busy highways for people taking shortcuts?

Some residential streets can feel like busy highways if they're often used as cut-throughs, and can pose a danger to unsuspecting pedestrians. In Smithtown, Edgewood Avenue might be the most notorious shortcut, though we're sure many in St. James will nominate their streets as cut-throughs between Lake and Moriches Avenues or Woodlawn Avenue and Middle Country Road.

What do you think are some of the most highly used and least appropriate cut through streets in Smithtown and the surrounding area? What threats do they pose and how do you think traffic could be better managed or avoided?

Tell us in the comments.

Alexander Avenue....coming off Middle Country Road going towards LIE Cars race through...don't stop at stop signs... get backed up waiting for light to change! Feels like a major street! Noisy too!

it is no wonder that these back roads are being used more than normal after the DOT did their BIG traffic study on main street and decided to create a safety westbound single lane and made it a nightmare to go through town making drivers use alternate routes so it wouldn't take 15 to 20 minutes to get through town

When the STOP signs were first erected on Woodlawn I thought they were just going to be a nuisance but, believe it or not, I got used to them and I even like the fact they help me keep my speed down. I never take the side streets and run through those STOP signs. However over the years, even before the new Woodlawn signs were erected, I have always seen some drivers speed right past the signs on the local streets. One of these creamed me and totaled my car some years ago, luckely I was not hurt. I will conclude there is a woman regularly speeding through one avenue with her BMW probably on the way to work. But I forget, BMW's are exempt from comimg to a STOP!

I know of two dogs killed on Ledgewood Ave. in the Pines. One happened right in front of me. Woman was doing at least 40 and I was wearing a vest. I contacted public safety once but nothing happens. Fourth precinct officers are rarely seen in the Pines. I'd love to know how many tickets they've written on side streets. Granted, we're only hurting ourselves by driving like idiots...when I was a kid, neighbors not only did the speed limit, they actually (gasp!) slowed down when they saw kids. Today any pedestrian is just an obstacle shaving 0.03 seconds off the arrival to soccer practice or to get home to watch the latest reality TV show. We've really fallen fast on this island. Selfish, reckless and not very bright are not good combined traits.
