Relay for Life Teams Raise Over $58K So Far

Will you be walking in memory of a loved one this weekend?

Southold Town residents will once again come together on Saturday and Sunday for one of the North Fork's biggest fundraisers.

The 8th Annual Relay for Life Southold event to benefit the American Cancer Society will take place this weekend at Jean Cochran Park in Peconic, beginning at 6 p.m. Traditionally, purple flags and ribbons are displayed throughout the Southold community in the month before the Relay For Life event.

This year, the "Paint the Town Purple" initiative kicked off on May 1, with Ivy League Florist in Southold and Mattituck Florist donating bows.

Each year, those who sign up gather for an organized, overnight community fundraising walk, with teams of people camped out around a track. Members of each team take turns walking around the track; the walk continues all night long, with a survivors' lap and a moving Luminaria ceremony for those who lost their battle with cancer.

Food, games and activities make the event family friendly.

To date, through the Southold Relay for Life group, 30 teams and 215 participants have raised $58,686.18.
