Photos: Lt. Theinert Barbecue Draws Many From Shelter Island Community

Check out this photo gallery from Saturday's barbecue and Thursday's arrival on Shelter Island to honor Lt. Joseph Theinert, who died in combat last June.

Lt. Joseph Theinert died to save his platoon last June in Afghanistan, and those platoon members have been enjoying a weekend on Shelter Island — the home of their fallen comrade — before they disband after they return to Fort Drum on Monday.

Music, food and all sorts of beverages were on hand at a Saturday barbecue off Westmoreland Drive on Shelter Island, thrown by Chrystyna Kestler — Lt. Theinert's mother — and Frank Kestler, Lt. Theinert's stepdad.

The troop arrived on the island on Thursday. Here are some pictures of the ongoing events on Shelter Island to honor our armed forces.
