Photo: 'Witch's Hat' Clean-Up Commences

A crew from Kaiser Maintenance, of Jamesport, donated tree removal services on Thursday.

As promised earlier this week, work to repair the 85-year-old 'Witch's Hat', an iconic structure that sits on Main Road in Aquebogue, started.

On Thursday afternoon, a crew from Kaiser Maintenance, of Jamesport, donated tree removal services and will continue work on Friday, removing poison ivy from the site, which has fallen under disrepair.

The restoration project is a joint effort by the Save Main Road civic group and Riverhead's Landmarks Preservation Commission.

Once the grounds are cleaned up, volunteers are set to repair the Witch's Hat structure, which was once used as a gas station and candy shop.

The volunteers will replace the shingles, windows and doors and give it a fresh coat of paint.
