Orient Beach State Park Cancels Holiday Tree Lighting

State Parks and Recreation announces cancellation of yearly event.

The New York Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation announced on Monday that Orient Beach State Park's annual holiday tree lighting and visit from Santa scheduled for Dec. 2 has been cancelled due to several unforeseen circumstances.

Deputy Regional Director of Long Island's state parks George Gorman said that the tree that has been used and was going to be used again had been uprooted during Tropical Storm Irene and that too many issues with park staff and local volunteers came up at the same time.

"Some staffers had some medical issues and volunteers just aren't as available this year," he said. "So with all this we decided to cancel this year again next year."
