Mattituck Natives Design ‘Stronger Than Sandy’ Bracelets

Local woman is selling rubber wristbands to help those worst affected by Hurricane Sandy.

If you’ve seen local people wearing blue wristbands with the phrase “Stronger Than Sandy” etched in and were interested in having one yourself, these bracelets are readily available.

Mattituck resident Laurie Stelzer Reilly is selling the wristbands for $5 each, and the money raised will go to people who were hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy — those living in places such as Long Beach, Amity Harbor and Broad Channel. The bracelets were designed by Mattituck natives Jackie Reilly and Vita Giannone and friend Liz Nachman, all of whom work for Ace Marketing Company in Garden City.

“The cause became a passion for all of them because they were all personally affected by the hurricane,” Reilly said. “Jackie lived in Amity Harbor and lost her home, Liz lived in Long Beach and cannot return to her home for six months, and Vita's boyfriend is a New York City fireman in Richmond Hill, Queens-Engine 294, Ladder 143 — seven families in his fire house lost their homes in one area, Broad Channel.”
