Historic Pictures of the Old Mill on Mattituck Inlet

Check out these pictures from the 1950's of Mattituck's Old Mill, when the turnstile bridge over the creek was removed.

Most locals know that the historic restaurant and pub in Mattituck,  set to open in the spring, was once a tidal grist mill. Here are some pictures capturing the demolition of the turnstile bridge that once crossed Mattituck Inlet from the 1950's.

These pictures were sent to us by Richard Lesnikowski, who grew up here in Mattituck, courtesy of Howard Wells.

Mike Drum, formerly of Mattituck, adds this commentary:

"The property across the creek from the Mill, shown in pictures four and five, was created, or filled, and owned by my great grandfather, Patrick Drum. He trucked soil from our farm property and filled the wetlands one truck at a time.  The fill operations and work to create this usable land was done some time prior to 1935 when he died.

"We had to sell the property around 1953 to pay off my great Uncle Otto who wanted to inherit the farm from his wife, Irene Drum. Old Uncle Otto Andreg was the Chief for many years and married into the Drum family. As the story goes, when my Aunt Irene died, she hid her will in the guest bedroom floor boards so her husband Otto wouldn't find it. It appears she didn't leave all her holdings to mean Uncle Otto. He found the will, ripped it up and Hank had to pay the old geezer off the keep the farm and pay taxes!"
