East End Planner: NoFo Rock & Folk Concert Series Closes Out 2012

Also this weekend, take photos with a group in the woods of Sag Harbor – and the entire world – or drop by WHBPAC and hear the man who produced Johnny Cash and Diana Ross.

If you're looking for a laugh or some live music, dancing, biking, or hearing a book reading, there's plenty to do around the East End this weekend.

Shelter Island

FRIDAY NIGHT LAUGHS: Shelter Island Library continues its Friday night events this weekend. Starting at 7 p.m. husband and wife comedians Bill Scheft and Adrienne Tolsch will be sharing some side-splitting stories about their lives working together.

Cutchogue

HARVEST PARTY: Lieb Cellars will be hosting its first harvest party at its new location on Oregon Road in Cutchogue, with hors d'oeuvres and live music from 5 to 8 p.m. Cost for non-members is $35; $25 for Lieb's Bridge Lane members; and $15 for its Oregon Road members.

COMEDY NIGHT: At Castello di Borghese, Chris DiStefano will be headlining a nightful of comedy starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $15 online and $20 at the door. 

NOFO CONCERT SERIES: The NoFo Rock and Folk Fest is wrapping up its 2012 concert series with a free showing on Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. The concerts, comprised of one show last summer, was split into a few different concerts this year. Corky Liang and the Memory Thieves, Memphis Crawl and Jon Divello will perform for free on Sunday to say thanks to all those who showed up.

FOOD + WINE: Spouses, chefs, authors and James Beard Award-winners Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg will be discussing their newest book, "The Food Lover's Guide to Wine" on Sunday at 2 p.m. The event, at Bedell Cellars, is free and open to the public.

Riverhead

LAWN MOWER RACES: The Elks Lodge will host a Lawn Mower Race and Children's Bicycle Races on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at 1239 East Main St.

Westhampton

WHBPAC: Nick Lowe, the famed producer-turned singer-songwriter, will be performing Saturday night at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. Lowe, who has produced Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, Diana Ross – just to name a few – in his career, goes on at 8 p.m. Tickets run from $25 to $45.

Southampton

COUNTRY DANCE BENEFIT: Get your dancing shoes out Friday night for a country ho-down at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. Featuring country BBQ, country two-step lessons, line dancing and more, the dinner will benefit dancing and yoga courses held for seniors with Parkinson's Disease and people afflicted with HIV and AIDS.

OPENING RECEPTION: An opening reception for a solo exhibit of East End artist Jon Mulhern will take place Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. The exhibit will feature Mulhern's paintings and sculptures at 4 North Main Gallery.

Sag Harbor

PHOTO WALK: One local walk will be taking place as part of a worldwide event organized by Scott Kelby, president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. A local chapter of the Fifth Annual Worldwide Photowalk kicks off at the Elizabeth A. Morton Wildlife Refuge, meeting at 9:45 a.m.

Montauk

ARCHAEOLOGY FESTIVAL: The Montauk Historical Society's Indian Museum Committee is hosting its first Archaeology Fest on Saturday at the Second House Museum from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with ongoing skills demonstrations on the grounds of the Second House Museum. Funding is being provided by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities. The freeevent is suitable for people of all ages and everyone is invited. 

DUATHLON: The 9th Annual Serpent's Back Mountain Bike Duahtlon takes place in the trails of Hither Hills on Sunday starting at 10 a.m. The race consists of a 2.4 mile trail run, followed with a 12 mile mountain bike, followed with a 2.4 mile trail run. Individual and relays are welcome. Cost $45 online to register or $55 the day of the competition.

Recurring Events

FARMERS MARKETS:

  • A farmers market in Greenport will run through Oct. 13 at the Methodist Church from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. 
  • In Sag Harbor, a farmers market is running through Oct. 27 in front of the Breakwater Yacht Club on the same days, at the same time.
  • Flanders Fresh Farm Food Market runs on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the David Crohan Community Center through Oct. 13.
  • In East Hampton, Friday farmers markets are held at the Nick and Toni's parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • The Westhampton Beach Farmers Market runs through Nov. 17 at the Village Municipal Parking Lot, each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

COUNTRY FUN: Harbes Farm in Mattituck comes alive in the fall with Country Fun Days beginning at 10 a.m. each weekend day. This truly North Fork experience features live music, farm animals, barnyard bounce, ponyrides, tricycle track, goat mountain, singing hayride and educational tour, pig races, lunch and dinner country fresh food, wine tasting, local fruits and vegetables and more. Read more about Harbes and take a photo tour of all three North Fork locations here.

HAUNT NIGHTS: Every Friday and Saturday night during October, Harbes Haunt Nights are back at the Sound Avenue corn maze. Get lost from 7 to 10 p.m. in the woods of a custom-made Sherwood Forest! Cost is $12.95 per person.

even worse?...When I had the publisher of North Fork Magazine contact me regarding the blatantRead More violation, what were his comments?? To add further insult to injury, he said & I quote: "I thought I was doing Greenport a favor...all of the businesses there are suffering...this paper doesn't make any money...sure I have advertisers but they don't pay their invoices...maybe if the cover of the magazine brings business to Greenport, maybe those merchants will pay their bill.."

Of ALL people who should grasp the concept of plagiarism and copyright laws, it should be a newspaper editor/publisher! Cropping out her signature proves they knew full well that they were stealing her work. I'd suggest the artist contact a copyright attorney pronto. I'm always astonished when something like this occurs when a simple phone call to the artist might have been successful in allowing him to use her work WITH her signature intact instead of doing something so underhanded.

I've just tried to do a Google search for you and from what I've found you need to either check withRead More your local library to see if they have one they might lend you--OR--try Audio/Visual online companies. There are some which DO rent projectors for days or weekends. I have one but just checked with my husband and at the very least it needs a replacement bulb(which are fairly expensive)--hasn't been looked at in years so there's no way I could guarantee it would work. You've definitely given me an idea, though--I'll get mine in shape at some point and rent it to folks for a nominal sum. I'm sure there are many others who have old film they'd enjoy viewing for family reunions as would my own family. Good luck. If you don't succeed for next weekend, you have other options. At the very least you might be able to have the film transposed to a DVD and distributed to your family members although that's costly too, depending on how many copies you need. Just a thought, but you could add the old footage in with some taken AT the reunion as a nice follow-up gift for the attendees?
