A Mattituck couple is frantic after their dog went missing on Friday.

Kayla Masem said her dog Charlie, a female pointer mix who's white with a large brown spot over one eye, was lost on North Riley Avenue. She was last seen near Waldbaums, on Factory Avenue and Main Road, on Saturday.

Masem, who has a 13-month old baby and is pregnant, said she and her husband have had Charlie for four-and-a-half years.

On Friday, Charlie disappeared, Masem said. The couple kept the dog on a 30-foot leash outside their home, which has no fence, and Charlie broke free of her collar.

"We're really upset," Masem said. "I don't understand this — she's gone off before, into the woods behind our house, but we call her and she comes back."

She added that Charlie, who is shy but very friendly, is their only pet. "We love her. She is definitely part of the family."

Anyone with information is asked to call Kayla Masem at 631-315-5047.

Just saw on central drive !! The yards I saw her in was on central between zena and breakwater! She looks fine but wouldn't come to me...

Linda, Thank you! I'll tell the owner.

We had a second sighting by the beach there tonight so I know she's still in the area. Has to be hiding because I've driven the area since about 12 and haven't seen her. Oh! And she's only outside to go potty, too cold to be in the yard much longer!

they kept the dog on a 30 foot leash outside the home?? doesn't sound like she's "part of the family". I don't keep my family members on 30 foot leash in the back yard. No wonder the poor thing ran away.
Paris Stachtiaris December 04, 2013 at 07:01 PM
@Ditty51. Don't be so critical. This family is very upset that their pet is missing and we need to show some empathy towards them at their time of need not criticism.

Well - she's not allowed to go to the bathroom inside, do yes she is outside for 5-10 minutes throughout the day. Hence my explanation above that she isn't "kept" outside - because I knew someone would read it that way. She typically spends a good part of the day sleeping on the couch. We don't have the luxury to let her run in the yard. Being un fenced..

Just wondering if you found Charlie yet? I went back down to wear I saw her yesterday, however the tide is too high so I wasn't able to walk very far down the beach. I will go back later if you haven't found her.
Greg Masem December 05, 2013 at 01:48 PM
Thank you - not yet we haven't. I spent from about 11-4 and 5-9 in the neighborhood and by the beach yesterday. Was at the end where the guardrail looks like it got yanked out, right? I left some of her food down there too, and this morning it looked like it was all still there
Susan Pontino December 05, 2013 at 03:53 PM
Yes I saw her down there...about ten mins to the west right past where there is a newer bulkhead built. I didn't go back today, I'm sorry because when I was there earlier, there was sketchy car parked there. I didn't feel comfortable going back by myself. I did ride around the neighbor a bit but no luck.

I saw this morning around 9:45!!! She was laying by the benches by the Mattituck Creek Water Access area! She took off towards the beach and I followed her towards the Mattituck beach!! I saw her last by the Mattituck Inlet sign on Breakwater!! She is hiding in the brush in the dunes!!! I drove around after getting my car but didn't see her again... She's close by though!!! Good luck!!

Susan - I think I know the car you saw, I was there yesterday morning before heading west for work as well. Seat laid back, something on the roof. Looked out of place for 7am. Walked probably 1/2 way down that night but couldn't see a thing and didn't want to startle a deer. Today (appx noon) got most of the way but tide was up. Linda - the number in the article forwards to our cells, the 560 number is one. Another option, text to 623-850-4168 comes through to me by email with a minor delay. Today I walked from where the beach gets cut off by the bulkheads (?) to the west to the DEC waterway access area. Think I got there around noon. I did stop to move my car a few times just to not be too far away in case SPD showed up. I also walked the dune/brush area just west of breakwater, north of the volleyball area (I am guessing? By the coke machine) btwn breakwater and inlet rd. I saw a lot of relatively fresh prints that weren't accompanied by human prints along the entire beach in that area. Literally from breakwater as far west as I could get. Some leading up to the streets and houses, some just along the beach. The rain made it easier to tell which were somewhat new. I think she's been in the area most of the week, SPD tried to catch her by strawberry fields on Sat (Apparently she was originally standing -in- rt 48), someone saw her just south of there same day. The food left previously was gone today so I left some tonight (at waterway access, first benches; inlet rd and the road that deadends to the west) I took off once it started to rain and get dark, I know with the rain she would have gone into hiding. She is VERY skittish. I think from her history. I got her when I was in Phoenix. From a family that found her on the street - and after their other dog not getting along with her, were going to just let her go again. Got her at about 1 year. She is also VERY afraid of smoke, so the fireplaces the last few nights have probably made her hide even more. If I even burn toast, or cook bacon, she sits as close to the front door as possible. Does not surprise me that when called she takes off. Family coming to assist tomorrow, hoping that with people she knows she will be more likely to come out - and having the whole day will be able wait out the tides if needed to get further down the beach. Thank you again for ALL your help.

Did you have any luck today. I was out of town so didn't get a chance to look. Yes there were keys on the roof of the car I saw and when I got back to mine a male sat up in the back seat without a shirt on. My husband and I looked around 4:15 to 4:45 Friday but it gets so dark early. W

Nothing yesterday. Someone spotted by strawberry fields so we spent the day between Rt 48 and the sound. Out again today looking.
Greg Masem December 09, 2013 at 10:07 PM
Saw her tonight but couldnt get close enough - as soon as she saw the headlights she took off running. Right down by the beach again, about halfway from Inlet Rd to the dead end. Left some food, and moved her bed from where we had it on the weekend to down there. (Off to the west at the end down there) Hopefully she will come back and stick close by when she finds it, and in the morning I am going to quietly head down before work. I think when spooked she is running a good distance down the beach
Linda Stavrinos December 09, 2013 at 11:52 PM
Happy to hear that you at least spotted her! I hope you can catch her tomorrow morning! Good luck and I will be keeping my eyes open as always!
Susan Pontino December 13, 2013 at 08:54 PM
Any good news yet? I think about her all the time.
Greg Masem December 17, 2013 at 07:13 PM
Sorry have not been online, our son caught a few things when he was out of town last week and I haven't sat still long enough to jump on here. Nothing new, not since I spotted her that night. Still see a LOT of tracks down the beach, headed up to some houses etc.. Continuing to leave food, tonight is the only night I ahve not been down in te area because I don't think I can even make it off my block, just a sheet of ice out there

Why doesnt your dog come to you when he hears or sees you? Its strange.
Greg Masem December 18, 2013 at 10:01 PM
I am thinking with all the noise (I've never been down there when it was quiet) that she simply doesn't hear us. She has been seen a good half mile down the beach and my voice surely doesn't carry that far. When driving and I spotted her I was didn't get real close and she ran before I could roll down the Window. I think she may have run because one of the local agencies (which I choose not to name) tried to corral her with cars in the Strawberry festival field. I've noticed by the beach if I am more than 20 feet from my group we can't hear each other at all. And I can't say she's even "seen" me, as when I caught a glimpse of her I wasn't driving our vehicle so she just saw a strange car driving down the road and stop. She has always been really skittish in uncertain circumstances and won't come to anyone until she is ready. She lived on the streets in Phoenix for a decent amount of time before I got her, so it isn't unexpected for her to have some serious trust issues, even now 4 years later
Greg Masem December 27, 2013 at 08:39 AM
We have been continuing the daily ritual of trips up there to see if she is around - not sure if anyone else has seen her but late night Saturday she was there (11p) and again early Monday (5:30am) We had been using a motion activated camera, just to be able to say for sure she was still around since noone has seen her. Today is 4 weeks, maybe this will be the weekend - walking the beach again because it just seems like she is spending her time west down the beach..
Linda Stavrinos December 27, 2013 at 09:35 AM
Well I am glad to hear she is still around! Yeah! Of course, I want her to be back home with you and the family! Can any animal control facility assist you perhaps with a "trap" that could help you catch her? Have you contacted Riverhead animal control at all to ask for any advise, hints, etc? Do they have a trap you can borrow? Just throwing out ideas since it's now four weeks... The plus side is that you know where she is!! I am always keeping my eyes open for you! I sure hope you can catch her!

Quick update, I know it's been a while. We believe she is still out there and continue to leave food out, and spend time on the weekends in the area keeping an eye out. The camera we were using to check for when she came down there was stolen. Through much of the snow there was no sign of any activity so hoping she was sheltering somewhere out of the weather. We have a trap to use, and there is a chance she was in it at one point but managed to break the hinge loose and escape. Not certain it was her but good chance. (Camera was still there then and just picked up a white blur..)
