Motorcyclist Dies After Being 'Seriously Injured' In Crash

A motorcyclist died after being badly hurt in a motorcycle crash that took place on Route 25, just west of Love Lane, in Mattituck in early September.

According to Southold Town police, Farmingville resident Michael D. Lourine, 33, was driving a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle westbound at 5:50 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway.

He struck a curb, was ejected, and struck his head on a utility pole, police said.

'Tornado' Reportedly Sighted On North Fork

Despite reports of a tornado in the Laurel area on Sept. 17, meteorologists say the technical word for the phenomenon is a "water spout."

Bill Goodman, meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Upton, said a storm "cell" passed through the Jamesport and Laurel area, and, while over the water of the Peconic Bay, created a "water spout."

Hero Lifeguard: Boy, 6, Was Not Breathing, Had No Pulse

What started out as just a normal day at the pool for lifeguard Michael Liegey, 20, at the Cliffside Resort Waterfront Condominiums in Greenport Thursday quickly turned into a life-or-death drama as he saved a drowning little boy.

According to Southold Town police, a call came in Thursday at 2:04 p.m. about CPR in progress on a boy, 6, who had reportedly drowned in the pool at the resort.

Liegey, a Southold resident, had started CPR on the child and was able to help him to begin breathing again, officials said.
