Transitioning for an autistic child

Transitioning for an autistic child

Its called Transition when a child goes from one school to another and for kids with autism it can be quiet the challange. After years of being taught one way, learning how to cope with different teachers, and just plain learning a different way then other children, as well as taking the bus for a total of three hours per day you have to wounder what will transition be like this time around.

You now have to learn who your teachers will be for the next year, get aquainted with a new school atmosphere, and hope it goes all according to plan. No worries as we the parents feel very comfortable with the choice we have made for our son and know he will be in good hands through out the days to come.

But most parents fear transition and why is that? Again new things can be scarey, and having an autistic child is not an easy process. Playtime is different because there skills for playtime are not similar to typical children.

Speech is either present or not present, in our case for our son it is not. Writing and reading are slightly different and though my son can read sight words and count up to a hundred he can not speak them. Writing is an effort but he is learning.

so as we embark on a new year for both our children and schoool is only weeks away, I have to say what keeps a child going through out the year is there days at school, as I have noticed sceduling, and visuals are importent for any child but espically for an autistic child.
