Tattoo History Exhibit Takes Over Half of East End Seaport Museum

'Tattoo: The Art of the Sailor' examines tattoo history and showcases local people with their own tattoos and stories — just in time for Greenport's Tall Ships Festival Memorial Day Weekend.

East End Seaport Museum Board member Keith McCamy is fascinated by the history of the tattoo — and with all the unique and personal stories associated with the famed form of body art. “Through tattoos, you have a fascinating glimpse into history and other cultures,” he said. “Sailors have been wearing tattoos for 300 years, since the days of Captain Cook. No one really wrote about them too much, the stories were always passed along orally." McCamy, the museum’s exhibit curator and website architect, and Greenport artist Arden Scott have worked for months putting together “Tattoo: The Art of the Sailor” display, which takes over half of the museum and will open to the public just in time for the Tall Ships Memorial Day Weekend hoopla. …

White Weathered Barn Gets Second Wind on Front Street

Owner of naturalistic and vintage boutique store gets more foot traffic at a more visible location in Greenport.

The White Weathered Barn is a unique boutique in Greenport, focusing on a simplistic, natural and vintage inspired aesthetic in its handmade gifts and interior design services. Thing is, not too many people knew about it, tucked away on a side street off of Main Street near Clawflowers when it first opened in the village last August — foot traffic just wasn’t happening. So a week ago, owner Rena Wilhelm reopened the White Weathered Barn on Front Street across from The Market next to Burton Books, where a clothing store had been and a department store was located originally. “Front is a much more active location — it was a problem before for people to just walk a few steps off the beaten path to come see me,” she said. The store offers …

East End Arts Celebrates 40 Years

The organization will host a fundraiser on Saturday at Raphael Vineyard in Peconic.

East End Arts is having a big birthday -- the organization will mark 40 years in 2012. And to celebrate, the organization will host a sold-out gala "Fantastic at Forty" on Saturday at Raphael Vineyard in Peconic, featuring a performance by the R&B and doo-wop group The Cleftones and silent auctions of artwork, and honoring a founding member of the group and legendary international sculptor Robert Berks. "East End Arts has gained a reputation as a significant force in the arts on Long Island over the past 40 years," said East End Arts Executive Director Patricia Snyder. "It is so appropriate the EEA is celebrating its 40th year on the heels of being a recipient of the highly regarded Bank of America Neighborhood Builders Award." East End …

Menhaden Fishing Industry Focus of New History Book

Southold Historical Society releases book on local bunker fishing.

Fishing for bunker, or Menhaden, is a lost way of life on the East End of Long Island. But the trade flourished from the late 18th century all the way through the 1960s. And members of the Southold Historical Society have captured this era in a new book entitled "Munnawhatteaug – The Last Days of the Menhaden Industry on Eastern Long Island." The society’s director Geoffrey K. Fleming and collection manager Amy Kasuga Folk worked on the book, a detailed history of the industry and 200 images of a typical bunker expedition of the 1960s, taken by local photographer and antiquarian book dealer Peter Stevens. “The images capture the industry in its waning days and provide a glimpse of a lost way of life,” said Folk. Bunker were used primarily …

As a child I toured the plant of Smith Meal, in Napeague, with my father and Steve Dellapola, and can still remember the steam and smell, as well as the size of the place. We used to buy old net for lobster traps, and fished off the beach in the ocean from it.   more ›

French Couple Opens Art Gallery in Aquebogue

Esprit de France opened last week on Route 25 in Aquebogue; artwork focuses on eclectic and international.

Paris natives Matthieu and Laure Chatin are no different from many who have made a trip to the North Fork, in that they came for the first time and fell in love with its natural beauty, proximity to the water, and relatively short drive to the hustle and bustle of New York City. But they aren't like many who have made a trip to the North Fork, in that they uprooted their life on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean to move to an area and start a business where they know no one. "We said it was the right place, and right moment to move and start something else," said Matthieu. After moving to Mattituck in June of 2010, the Chatins celebrated last Thursday the opening of their offering to the North Fork, Esprit de France - a gallery on Route…

Early Ed, Arts-Based School to Make Downtown Riverhead Its Classroom

Earlier this month, the North Fork Education Initiative signed a lease with the East Ends Arts Council School to open an early elementary program in downtown Riverhead.

With the lease signed just over a week ago with the East End Arts in Riverhead, the North Fork Education Initiative’s dream of a holistic school based on arts education on the North Fork is a few months away from being a reality. Elizabeth Casey Searl, co-executive director, said the Riverhead location is ideal because the Peconic Community School’s curriculum is arts-based and she is looking forward to a mutually beneficial agreement between the two groups. The school has offered them a large classroom, an arts room, a deck and the grounds to use. She said the proximity to the Long Island Science Center, Community Garden and Long Island Aquarium is crucial for the school's plan as well. “We plan to make the whole area our classroom,” …

Theater: 'How to Succeed' Really Succeeds in the Laugh Department

North Fork Community Theater's version of the popular Broadway play measures up in laughs and musical numbers.

Riding the recent buzz surrounding the popular resurrected versions of ‘60s Broadway musical, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” the North Fork Community Theater in Mattituck has its own version to offer at performances running through April 1 — and it’s really funny. The story of “How to Succeed” revolves around a New York City window cleaner named J. Pierrepont Finch, a young man who wants to advance in life. In the play, a "Book Voice" tells him that one book — How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying —contains the secrets to the success he desires. Tara McKenna as secretary Rosemary Pilkington — who pines after Finch, charmingly played by Michael Hipp— sings a heartfelt “Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm” near the …
