Question: What Happened to the 'Cable Crossing' Utility Shack?
The brick utility building is gone along with the 'Cable Crossing' signs for boaters.
On a Sunday walk down the beach at Orient Point, we noticed that the famous "Cable Crossing" utility building at the very end of the point before Plum Gut and its lighthouse is gone. Does anyone know when and why this was taken down?

Stephen Husak said on Facebook: "Been gone since Irene. I heard two stories. One said Suffolk Parks took it down with LIPA before the storm. The other said the storm took it out. The bricks were piled up next to the modern sub station. If you notice whole parking lot is gone. The beach used to slope down to both the bay and the sound. Now it just drops off from erosin."

The Department of Homeland Security took it down months ago because allegedly breaking into it.

WHAT A WASTE!
Trust the government to destroy the building rather than preserve it. It could have become an observation tower to complement Orient Beach State Park

Yes, judging by the plethora of one story observation towers in the world, you're absolutely right...
