Nov. 11: Veteran’s Day, Park District Vote and Blood Drive

Honor our living war veterans and fallen heroes, give blood and vote for Mattituck Park District Commissioner today.

The North Fork offers all sorts of Veteran's Day activities today.

1. Thank those who have served and protected our country at services in Greenport and Southold at 11 a.m. Greenport Girl Scouts will host the service in the village at the flag post in Mitchell Park, and the Southold Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold the service in Southold at the American Legion Post 803 in Southold. Also, look for profiles of 88-year-old World War II veteran and Orient Point resident Eleanor Faust and new Riverhead VFW commander Joe Edler later today on North Fork Patch.

2. Remember roller skating at Greenport's American Legion Post? Well, if enough money isn't collected to refurbish the rink, skating might be relegated to memories only. Go to Skipper's Restaurant in Greenport for a fundraiser from 12 to 8 p.m. today. Tickets are $18 at the door and a 50/50 raffle and door prizes are available.

3. If you live in Mattituck, remember to vote for park district commissioner from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Veterans Memorial Park in Mattituck. Former Park District Commissioner Gerard Goehringer is challenging incumbent Nick Deegan for this year's leadership position in the district.

4. You have the opportunity to give blood today at Eastern Long Island Hospital's fall community blood drive from  8 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. The blood drive takes place in the hospital's conference room. Make an appointment at 631-477-1000. Walk-ins are available too.

5. Don't forget about the Southold Historical Society's annual harvest dinner, a fundraiser held at Soundview Restaurant in Greenport today from 12 to 8 p.m.
