Generations of Monkees' Fans Flock to See Peter Tork

Followers of Peter Tork from all over Long Island gathered in Greenport for a fun solo show from the former Monkee.

Though it's been 40 years since Peter Tork's heyday as the trouble-making sandy blond member of the Monkees, his following certainly has not waned. Monkees fans of all ages packed into the small lobby of Greenport's Sandpiper Ice Cream Store Sunday night to catch a few new and old tunes from this talented musician, still actively touring with his new band, Shoe Suede Blues.

Tork wowed the audience during the concert, a benefit for the Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Foundation, with his versatile repertoire of classic Monkee hits such as "Daydream Believer" and "I'm a Believer," reworkings of classical compositions on the piano and a few traditional tunes on the banjo.

"He can play any instrument he picks up," said loyal Monkees fan Mary Ann Cybula of Commack.

Tom Small, 36, of Southold took his daughters Cora, 11, and Sophia, 7, to see Peter Tork Sunday night because, after hours of watching Monkees TV show reruns, his girls have become yet another generation of Monkee maniacs.

"You look at today's music and the message that's out there," he said. "And I'll take the Monkees anytime for my girls over whoever else is out there right now."
