Event: Help Plant Beach Grass at Bittner Preserve

Take an hour or so and help plant some beach grass at Peconic's Bittner Preserve on Wednesday.

Local environmentalist Laura Klahre and members of the Suffolk County Environmental Crew need help planting 2,900 beach grass plugs on a coastal bluff at Peconic's Bittner Preserve from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on this unseasonably warm Wednesday.

"I'm hoping the weather will stay fantastic," said Klahre, who also works for the Southold Town Land Preservation Department. "Bring your trowel or dibble stick!"

Bittner Property is 58 preserved acres located on Soundview Avenue between Goldsmith Inlet and Peconic Dunes Park on Long Island Sound. The parcel is jointly purchased by the county and town in 2008 for passive recreational use.  This project will help stabilize the property’s primary dune and is part of an overall effort to officially open up the park for public access, according to Klahre.

For more information, call the Town of Southold Land Preservation Department at (631) 765-5711.
