Emerging Art Long Island Featured at Greenport Gallery

A group of Long Island-based artists have formed a new organization to network with other professional artists.

A new art exhibition in Greenport is featuring styles not typically seen on the North Fork and is offering networking opportunities for professional artists.

The show is the first for a new artist group, Emerging Art Long Island, and is taking place at the in Greenport. One of the group’s founders, Colin Goldberg, described the group as similar to an art collective with artists who range from new to fairly well-established in their trade.

The big difference, according to Goldberg, is that the art his group creates is edgier than a lot of work showcased on North Fork and may be typically associated with galleries on the South Fork. Goldberg said many North Fork show have nautical themes and the artists he is working with work in a variety of media and styles not typically shown here. The South Fork is a hard market for newer artists to break into, said Goldberg.

Goldberg said the idea for the groups began as a chance encounter on the between him and Matthew Salerno, who works with painting and digital print-making in the Terrence Joyce Gallery.

“We wanted to create something of an offline social network for artists,” Goldberg said.

Goldberg said most people believe Long Island art is similar to Jackson Pollock or Willem deKooning or must be nautical in nature.

“People have a certain vision of what Long Island art is,” Goldberg said.

Emerge Art  Long Island wants to break that mold and showcase artists who are new or fairly established in the field but who work in media that one might not normally see in North Fork galleries. He also said the group would be willing to sponsor artists with less experience.

What the group has done is to create an offline social network of artists who have similar philosophies. Goldberg said the group would be willing to bring in other artists but the group differentiates itself from organizations that are community-based. This group is more curatorial- based and Goldberg said their focus is to showcase artists who view art as more of a profession than hobby. Emerge Art Long Island plans to establish a regular meeting schedule and is planning future shows in the area.

Artists featured in the show include Colin Goldberg, Bryan Lansberg, Steve Miller, Brian O’Leary, Oliver Peterson, Kevin Teare, and Ellen Wiener.

“People should come down,” Goldberg said. “They will be surprised at what they see.”

The show will run Dec. 3 through Jan. 1 at the Terrence Joyce Gallery in Greenport.
