Crimes Nearby: Mt. Sinai Woman Flees Police After Alleged Theft Attempt

The following information was supplied by Suffolk County and East End police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

 

Miller Place-Rocky Point:

• Emily Hindman, 25, of Mt. Sinai, was arrested Feb. 7 and charged with DWAI drugs, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlawful fleeing of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, and second-degree reckless endangerment.

A call came in reporting a possible attempted theft of a snow blower by three individuals on Village Drive in Medford at approximately 1:34 a.m. Police attempted to pull the vehicle, a 2006 Toyota Forerunner, over but it did not stop and the officer pursued. The Toyota continued from Village Drive to Southaven Avenue, then northbound on Route 112. Police deployed stop sticks on Route 112, which gave the vehicle two flat tires.

The Toyota continued onto Route 25 where it headed east and stopped near Wilson Ave. in Coram. An officer pulled his police car in front of the stopped Toyota, which moved forward and crashed into the police car passenger side. The driver, Hindman, was the lone occupant and was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured.

• Anisa Escobar, 41, of Mt. Sinai, was arrested in Smithtown Feb. 6 and charged with petty larceny. Escobar allegedly stole a television from BJs Wholesale Club in Setauket, brought the empty box to the BJs in Islandia, switched it on the shelf for a new television and returned it for a full refund.

• Justin Baumgartner, 22, of Rocky Point, was arrested Feb. 4 and charged with criminal mischief – intent to damage property. Baumgartner allegedly punched and shattered the rearview mirror of a 1999 Chrysler Sebring on Route 25 in Coram.

Westhampton-Hampton Bays:

• Police charged Jeremy Rosendahl, 32 of East Quogue, with criminal possession in the seventh-degree on Feb. 8 after pulling him over in Riverside.  Police say Rosendahl had a needle in plain view and admitted to having heroin hidden in his shoe.  Police also charged Rosendahl with having a suspended registration and for having an uninsured car.

• Police charged Cosmo Narracci, 44, of Huntington, with DWAI by alcohol on Feb. 7. Police say Narracci was pulled over on Old Country Road in East Quogue after he was involved in a car accident.  Police also charged him with failure to use designated lane.

• On Feb. 1, Southampton Police charged Brian Miller, 37 of Southampton, with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, alcohol related. Police say they pulled Miller over on South Country Road in Remsenburg for not having a rear license plate. Upon investigation, they found that Miller's license was revoked from a DWI charge he received on April 18, 2006. Miller was also charged for not having a license plate lamp.

• On Feb. 8, police charged Gayle Valentine, 48, of East Quogue, with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree. Police say Valentine was involved in a domestic dispute with her live-in boyfriend and allegedly hit him several times with an umbrella.  She was also charged with menacing and harassment.

Riverhead:

• Luz Gutierrez, 32, of Riverhead, was arrested on petty larceny charges on Jan. 11. Police reports state that Gutierrez removed children's toys, food, beverages, kitchen ware, and clothes from K-Mart without paying for them. He was transported to police headquarters, processed, released on $200 bail and given a desk appearance ticket.

• Benjamin Gilliam, 50, of Riverhead, was arrested on Feb. 8 on petty larceny charges. According to police reports, Gilliam stole $298 in groceries from Stop and Shop on Route 58. Reports state that Gilliam was caught by store security cameras concealing merchandise. He was placed under arrest on a civilian complaint, transported to police headquarters, processed, and held for arraignment.

Southampton:  

• Southampton Town police charged Todd Levy, 43, of Mastic Beach, with criminal possession of a controlled substance on Feb. 9 after pulling him over for speeding. Police said Levy also had no plate lamp. Police said that upon a search of Levy’s car, they found a quantity of heroin.

East Hampton:

• Jorge G. Castillo, 29, was arrested two days after allegedly choking his girlfriend with a towel during an argument at his house on Newtown Lane in East Hampton Village, police said.  The woman was able to get away and filed charges on Feb. 6 after she retreated to a friend's house. Castillo was initially charged with second-degree harassment, a violation, but police said he would be additionally charged with criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, a misdemeanor. East Hampton Town Justice Lisa R. Rana arraigned Castillo and released him on $300 bail. An order of protection was issued for the victim and police logged that they checked his home and car for any knives that were not work related.

•Pedro R. Santos, 22, of East Hampton, was arrested on a misdemeanor aggravated driving while intoxicated charge and driving without a license in East Hampton Village on Thursday night. Police said Santos was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer erratically on Newtown Lane and North Main Street at about 11 p.m. When he failed to signal as he turned into the Waldbaum's parking lot, police pulled him over. In addition to DWI, he was also charged with felony first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and seven violations, including consumption of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.
