Castello di Borghese Bottles Hand-Painted By Former Art Teacher

Check out the artwork of Greenport resident Mary Twomey at the Cutchogue winery.

Thinking of getting your sweetie a special bottle of wine for Valentine's Day? Or how about getting a bottle for a good friend on his or her birthday?

For the past year, Castello di Borghese winery in Cutchogue has been featuring bottles of wine with hand-painted designs for special occasions — and those designs are meticulously applied by Greenport resident Mary Twomey.

Twomey, 59, has worked part-time at the Cutchogue winery for 12 years in the tasting room, and she’s also sold wine at the Greenport Farmer’s Market for Castello. She was an art teacher at Riverhead High School for 35 years.

“This whole thing came about because a customer wanted something different for his wedding last October,” she said. “We did it, and he was flabbergasted.”

Since then, Twomey has been creating and applying exclusive designs to bottles of Castello wine for certain holidays — such as Christmas, Thanksgiving and Valentine’s.

“It’s nice and very unique,” said Marie Sufrin, head of sales and marketing for the winery. “We are getting requests."

If you would like a hand-painted bottle for whatever occasion from Twomey, let Castello di Borghese know ahead of time at 631-734-5111 or email info@castellodiborghese.com
